The Secret Ayurvedic Approach to Reversing Diabetes

Reversing Diabetes

Diabetes has become a major concern across the world with millions of people suffering from it. Although medication and insulin therapy can help manage diabetes, it does not reverse the condition. However, Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, offers a holistic approach to diabetes management that can help reverse the condition.

Ayurveda considers diabetes to be a lifestyle disorder caused by imbalances in the body’s three doshas – vata, pitta, and kapha. By addressing these imbalances, Ayurveda can help manage and reverse diabetes. Ayurvedic treatments include customized diets, lifestyle modifications, and herbal remedies, which can improve insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar levels.

Based on the prakriti (vata, pitta, kapha)- a reversal of type-2 diabetes is assessed and the basic things required by Ayurvedic Doctor are:

  • Knowing the dominant body type, history of the condition, and classification of type 1 & type 2 diabetes.
  • As per ayurveda curable and reversible diabetes comes under – pitta dominant and kapha dominant body type people whereas vata dominant body type having diabetes is difficult to reverse back but we predominately stop the intake of insulin (if) or reduce the intake of medication by reducing the symptoms with stopping further progressive damages that can happen to the body with age.

Treatment Suggested

  • Panchkarma:

The five major treatments in Ayurveda include Nasyam (nasal installation of medicine in any form), Vamana (emesis therapy), Vireachana (cleansing the stomach with the help of medication), Vasti (enema with medicine), and Rakhtmokshana (blood letting treatment).

However, not all of these treatments are suitable for Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 patients, as the specific treatment plan depends on the patient’s body type and medical history. Ayurvedic medication is initially given alongside regular medication, and after detox or panchakarma therapy, allopathic medication can be tapered.

Patients with Pitta and Kapha dominant bodies may experience complete reversal after undergoing the aforementioned treatments, while vata dominant body types can benefit from reduced allopathic medication dosage and repeated external Ayurvedic treatments and panchakarma therapy.

The detox treatment typically lasts 14-21 days, and blood reports are regularly checked as part of the assessment process.

  • Abhyangam: Diabetic individuals often experience stress, which can raise their blood sugar levels. Abhyangam therapy can alleviate muscle tension, enhance circulation, and increase glucose absorption, reducing the amount of insulin needed to manage impaired glucose levels.

  • Swedanam: Swedanam is a treatment that opens up pores and eliminates toxins through sweating, cleansing the system via the skin.

  • Vasti: Vasti uses medicated oils and decoctions to eliminate toxins from the body through the rectum, using a catheter. It includes anuvasana and niruha vasti with oils like madhuyastiyadi tailam and kwathas like madhuyasti and punarnavadhi.

  • Udwarthanam: Udwarthanam involves applying medicated powders on the body to reduce the medas dhatu or fatty tissue.

  • Virechanam: Virechanam is a purgation therapy that removes toxins from the liver and gallbladder, cleansing the gastrointestinal tract and promoting proper organ functioning.

Yoga for Diabetes

Regular physical activity or exercise is essential for managing diabetes as it helps to lower blood sugar levels, improve insulin sensitivity, and maintain a healthy weight.

Yoga, which includes a combination of physical postures, breathing exercises, and meditation, is a low-impact exercise that can be beneficial for people with diabetes. It can help to improve glucose control, reduce stress, improve flexibility and balance, and promote overall physical and mental well-being.

Some specific yoga poses that are recommended for managing diabetes include the shoulder stand, half spinal twist, forward bend, and the corpse pose. It is always advisable to consult a qualified yoga instructor or healthcare professional before starting any new exercise routine, especially if you have diabetes.
